Remote Sensing: Observing the Earth

More than ever we are in an age where information is power and never before has information been so readily and instantly available. All this is embraced by remote monitoring systems.
But what is remote monitoring? This seems to be the current buzz term of the moment, but why do we need these systems and how can they assist us in everyday life. Living in Britain we know better than most that the environment around us is always changing, our weather can change from summer to winter in a matter of hours, and our weekends are often planned depending on our local weather report. So in a way all of us use a form of remote environmental monitoring via the MET Office, love it or loath it the MET Office is our national monitoring solution.
Now let's take this a step further and look to monitoring our local environment. Whether it be monitoring if a server room has flooded or overheated to making sure the temperature of your fish tank is just right. These systems will monitor, alert you and in some cases take control and sort the issue before you've read the SMS telling you something happened.
There are a wide range of solutions that allow you to monitor and control your environment. Be it Temperature, Humidity, Voltage, Current Loop, Water/Flood Detection, Light or Carbon Monoxide. It seems the key to most these monitoring solutions is the remote factor, "technology-on-the-go" and with the current craze of iPhones and Blackberries we can view the 5 day weather forecast, access our emails and check out the latest share prices all in the time it takes us to make a cup of coffee.
So by utilising this "technology-on-the-go" (remote monitoring) we can now view a local environment in real time from anywhere in the world, just by accessing an easy configuration webpage or using the GSM network
An example would be you have a data-centre full of servers and network management systems. All it takes is someone to leave a door open and the normal cooling system may not cope, the room will heat up and heat up till something goes pop, normally in such cases this is an expensive pop. So why not install a HWg-STE that for around 150 will detect the increase in temperature before it becomes critical and email the technical bod on duty there is a "potential" problem, or for around 500 use the HW-Damocles 2404i that will notice the increase and not only email but also turn on the back-up air conditioning unit and fix the problem without any human intervention. Another good value solution for server rooms and data centres would be the EM01b-STD Websensor with integrated Temperature, Humidity and Light sensors all areas are covered, plus you can add optional sensors (like a flood detector or door sensor). All these solutions will cost a lot less than the cost involved if the environment took a turn for the worst.
Now apply this example to restaurants and their fridge-freezers, plumbers who want to monitor CO emissions, transporting goods or livestock, NHS applications to monitor the transportation of organs or monitoring temperature of blood packets. I'm sure you can name many many more.
Add to this the fact the government on both National and European levels are bringing out new legislation on what seems like a weekly basis to track, monitor and provide documentation on everything from food preparation, which products from T&D can resolve. To monitoring the temperature and humidity of livestock and goods transportation where the Comet H series can provide a solution.
Low cost dataloggers are another great way to monitor our local environments, simple devices which can be put in with goods/food boxes, inside fridge-freezers or pretty much where ever you like. They sit there soaking up data on temperature, humidity, voltage or CO emissions, then you collect the datalogger stick it in your PC via a USB slot and the all the data is loaded onto your computer. These really are simple plug and play devices and all adhere to the legislation being set out for monitoring such environments. Some of these devices are so low cost they can be regarded as disposable with the cargo, like the SM100 Temperature Datalogger.
